Debt from 2005 definitely statute barred?

evening!
Quick question: if a company hasn't contacted someone about an outstanding debt since 2005 is it definitely statute barred?

OH had a letter this morning about his and exes joint account from 1996 which was closed when they divorced in 2004. He was contacted by a collection agency about 6 months later saying there was money owing, which he paid in full (cannot find a receipt though, he's moved house twice since then!)

He heard nothing more until the letter arrived from a new collection agency this morning. Now they're demanding £2600

What can he do?
