Anything to be really concerned about?

My other half had been applying for jobs like mad, desperate to get out of where he currently is as he hates it so much.
Recently went for an interview in a hotel and was offered the role for £16.5K a year in writing (via email) by the line manager.

He then receives a contract which confirms the role etc and states he will be remunerated at a rate of £8.15 per hour (all seems ok as in line with what hours he expects to work and the salary etc) however whilst it states that his 'usual' hours will be 39 per week, he is guaranteed 15 hours.

a) This is not really what he agreed to but should 39 hours be the norm then the p/h rate will equate to £16.5K a year - which is binding, the initial email from the manager which was agreed to or the subsequent contract (which does not require a signature might I add)

b) Is the guaranteed 15 hours something to worry about - i.e. is this usually just a get out clause for the hospitality industry etc and it will be closer to the 39 hour per week or more on the whole?

He doesn't seem to concerned, but as an office worker myself I am not used to contracts of this nature!

Thanks in advance

I am no expert but I would be concerned if my contract stated that I was only guaranteed 15 hours per week.

I'd be concerned as well. I certainly wouldn't agree to that.
  • It sounds like the want the flexiblity to offer more or less work, perhaps during busy/quiet periods. I'd be a little worried that they have no obligation to offer more than 15 hours and he might find himself with a lot less work than he expects.
  • Plus his leave will be calculated on 15 hours a week and not the 39...

And if he is only guaranteed 15 hours, that's 3 hours a day. So they can only pay him 3 hours a day when he takes a week's leave.
