fresh orange juice...what exactly do they mean by concentrate

do you know what they do, and why it is called 'made from concentrate'

i have often wondered about this, but i still ended up buying it, but now i am trying to buy just freshly squeezed juice....or am i better off buying a juicer, and buying a load of oranges from the market... and making it myself ?

the thing is we all know how they word labels and packaging to making think things are healthy.....

for a few months now i try and buy as much fresh and non processed stuff as poss... but even the so called healthy things can not be healthy..

From concentrate just means that when they harvest the fruit, they juice it and then they concentrate it by removing all the water from it (the original juice is about 85% water or something). Then they can ship it and it takes up a lot less space and then at the other end they just add the water back in.

I try to buy only juice not from concentrate

I think you're right cupid_s, don't they ship it in big frozen blocks then defrost it to add the water back - puts me off a bit :/

    Hi

I used to work in a well known fast food "restaurant" when I were a nipper and the orange juice came as "concentrate" frozen in 2kg cartons- basically it looked like the bits that were left stuck to the juicer, scraped off and popped in a carton we simply added water and sold it to the unsuspecting public.

It's worth noting that juice from concentrate often contains "product of more than one country" - so it could be the scrapings from juicers from Florida to Fraserburgh, all in one carton.

Buy less juice, drink less juice but buy good stuff- a bit like wine really.

Edited to add- never never use juice from concentrate in carrot and orange soup- bleugh!

I only buy from concentrate for environmental reasons.

Its never going to beat PROPER freshly squeezed From PROPER FRESH oranges ( ie what we get here) Your tropicanas and so forth are not that freshly squeezed, Im reckon on being squeezed at least 3 weeks plus from when they are shelved in supermarkets.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Funny you should ask about this CTC as I've just stopped buying it because like you say even healthy things are not all they seem. I now buy fresh juice but less of it. It's strictly rationed in our house - 1 glass of OJ at breakfast and 1 of apple after school. I don't drink it at all-prefer my fruit juice fermented :D

I've also stopped buying dried milk powder and UHT milk which I used for yogurt (finally got the hang of making it from fresh milk). I've also stopped buying refined vegetable oils, I'm just fed up with all this industrialisation of food. I want food that has had as little done to it as possible -real food.

Obviously I buy my flour ready milled, and my butter ready churned (have done this myself but all that shaking made my arms itch  ), my coffee ready ground, etc

And another thing those tetrapack cartons it comes in are really difficult to recycle and I was getting through a lot with the UHt milk as well. I know Tropicana type juice comes in similar cartons, but you can buy a lot of fresh juice in recyclable plastic bottles. My kids love Copella apple juices, homegrown too ;)

they way i was thinking about it, was that it comes across as 'fresh' and 'healthy'...... so basically its made out of dregs at the bottom of the big industrial juicers.. then

in reality would we drink it if we see it being 'made' or processed ...?

edit...... its got me thinking now..... i dont buy normal squash anymore because of the additives.... and i buy high juice.... so how does that fair ?

I don't know about high juice, but I occasionally buy squash or cordials from Rocks (Waitrose stock them - sorry I know you don't go in supermarkets, but an organic shop will have them). They are made with sugar, fruit and things like citric acid but nothing else. They also have beautiful labels :D

The site lists all the ingredients ;)

Whole oranges it says, so I guess that's what it is, I'm sure they would have to state 'juice from concentrate' if that's what was used.
