Personal Wedding Vows

Options
Hi all, did a quick search but couldn't find this topic. Was just going through our registrar booklet and choosing vows, I don't mind one of the ones in there but wondering if there's something better out there.... (without having to resort to writing our own!) So what is everyone having? Standard ones or something else?

We're having a humanist ceremony so we're working with the celebrant to write something personal. Not got as far as what they are though! We've been asked to think about what draws us to each other, what we love about the other. I think this will feed into the vows, like if you love your partner's sense of humour he could vow to "always make you smile when you're blue".

I may be wrong, but with civil ceremonies is there not a few lines that you absolutely have to say to make the wedding legal?

Katy are you having a civil ceremony in England? If you are you might be restricted!

Yeah there's a few lines you have to say (can't remember exact wording) but then in the booklet there's a choice of 4 or 5 different things you can say after that or you can supply your own words. Had a look around the internet but nothing's grabbing me yet

Hi Katy, we're in the same boat, dont like the ones in the book but dont want to completely resort to our own as we arent that creative with words lol so at the moment Im googling vows and taking snippets from others to form my own (he may write his yet), so long as theres no religious content in there we should be ok x

In a civil ceremony you have to make legal declarations, you're not married without that. But the vows are optional, they can offer you variations or you find something yourself. We did write our own and I'm really glad we did, but some googling will give you examples of the sorts of things to go for and adapt to suit yourselves

Can you add bits to vows in a church ceremony, before or after the legally required/official bit?

Not in a catholic ceremony, don't know about CofE but I suspect not!

ETA - a quick google suggest you can't in CofE either. Don't know why you'd want to anyway, the vows are beautiful :)

Thanks Daisie, the vows are already beautiful but it would have been nice to say a simple personal sentence just before the full vows begin :) Plenty of other opportunities though!

Thanks everyone, looks like more googling is in my future! After the first few they all seem to blend into one though!

    Good luck Due March!
