I'm interested in any advice you may have or how you got into it what your turnover etc,im sorry to be nosy! I won't expect too much interest in this thread there's not that many in England at the sec it's quite an american thing! I Currently am a senior sous for Marco Pierre White and looking to be self employed with a view to working for me!

Also for those of the out there would you ever consider hiring a local chef on a flexible basis maybe just once or ongoing to either ;
cook for a dinner party - So you can concentrate on hosting
party's - weddings,wakes,BBq's etc
receptions
cooking dinners in your kitchen and storing in the fridge/freezer for you. Cant be done in my remote kitchen too!

It's a play on the different meanings of turnover, ie in your field of work you might make apple turnovers for dessert, but the Apple company have turnover of $000,000s from their sales.

I'm pretty certain I'd never actually do this, but would never count it out. Only for a very special occasion. As the point of dinner parties (which I don't 'do') is to show off your own cooking and hosting skills.

Only as a one-off kind of thing, as per the occasions above.

This I like, but I'd prefer for the cooking to be done remotely, i.e. in chef's own kitchen (and if business took off, I guess that'd make more business sense anyway). Would definitely consider. Probably would never actually do it (low/average income, not a big 'foodie' anyway), but could appeal to the cash rich/time poor contingent. There do seem to be similar services already available, albeit something I've never personally looked much into.

In case it helps, I can imagine hiring someone to cook for a reception, but not having someone in to cook in my own kitchen.

One thing I've seen advertised locally is people offering a cookery lesson in their own home, usually 'foreign' cookery, eg a Spanish speaker offering to teach you to cook Spanish food and some of the vocab you'd need to either buy or order similar food on holiday.

I did something similar with a friend when at college, (Hospitality) course. We would go to people's houses and cook and serve dinner for them and their guests. We only got about one a month there wasn't a great market and being students we were relatively cheap, but it was worth our while, we were not Marco standard of course, but we kept it simple and well presented. I don't think there was a business in it though.
