Raising a grievance

My husband has worked for a company for two years. He was promoted to supervisor in October 2012 on three months probation. Finally after arguing with the company to get his pay rise, his contract started in march 2013. Today a member of staff told him the boss and area manager are discussing my husbands demotion. My husband brought it up with the area manager, who said sales are down since he got his pay rise. My husband pointed out that this also coincides with the boss taking time off. His wife left him, he ended up in a mental health clinic twice and turned up to work drunk. He left the place closed one day because he tried to take his life. The area manager is close friends with the boss, so these issues have been brushed under the carpet. My husband is horrified to learn he could be demoted, he puts 100% into his work and is very reliable. He covered the centre while his boss was off work. He has phoned hr to raise a grievance about his boss' conduct at work because he is afraid he will be forced to leave, like other employees have. There is apparently an option to transfer, which would be good. We've not experienced a grievance before, what will happen?

How the grievance is handled is different for every employer, I think. Your husband needs to read his employee handbook, there should be information in there.
In my case, I raised a grievance against my line manager. As soon as the formal grievance (in letter format) was received, they removed him as my manager (although he continued to work within the company) and employed an external investigation company. Witness statements were taken, meetings were held and we were both kept informed of the process.0
