Any point in applying to Lloyds

I was made redundant four years ago, less than 12 months after my wife had to retire on medical grounds following major spinal surgery. She didn't want to do so, but her employer, the NHS, felt her post was no longer suitable.
We've both been self employed since then, bringing in less than half of what we earned in full time employment - and that's a good month.
Our earnings were virtually zero for many months as we spent more and more time looking after my mother in law who has since passed away.
In December we had to face reality and take out a DMP with Step Change.
In January and February I had a short spell of employment in a banking contact centre. When this ended I applied for a similar job at the first possible opportunity and would have been successful had I not failed the credit check. The DMP has obviously kicked in.
A major bank - Lloyds - is now recruiting call centre and branch staff in Belfast where we live.
Is there any point in me applying or is this field of employment now completely closed to me? I really don't want to go through the misery of being told I have a job, and then being told I haven't because of the credit check.

You may find given the sector they'd want a checkable 5 year history, atleast for branch staff, no harm in applying but I would expect the worst & react to the best.

Do they give you any chance to explain a poor credit rating or do they just say no?

AFAIK, they just say 'no', and don't offer you the chance to explain yourself. However, that's not to say you can't ask for the chance to explain yourself. A 'no' would still be very possible, and maybe highly probable. If you can 'handle' this possibility/probability, it still doesn't hurt to try. Good luck.
