You should honour the contract as you would expect them to and don't expect a reference if you do just up and leave.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0

If you leave without working your full contractual notice, then you've breached your contract.
Theoretically your employer could sue you for breach of contract. The likelihood of that depends in part on what you do. If you're Brad Pitt and you decide you don't fancy finishing your latest film, you're likely to get taken to the cleaners - it's effectively impossible to get a substitute Brad Pitt. If you're actually a cleaner, it's fairly easy for the employer to find a substitute cleaner to hire instead - so you might only be liable for the extra cost of hiring an agency cleaner over you for the parts of your notice you didn't work.
Most employers wouldn't bother suing, but IIRC we have had a case on these boards where that's happened.0
