Hi
I work in a supermarket. I worked full time night shifts for four years. I had to come off night shifts due to health reasons and recommendations by my GP. I explained to work that I want to work days full time and gave them a letter from my GP.
Work offered me a part time position on days until a full time position is available. I tuck it. As months went by I kept asking for more hours and they keep saying the dont have it. But they are employing new part time staff throughout the day ! I have applied for other internal vacancies but have been knocked back, I have asked to work on another department as well as mine so I can have full hours and again they say no because its too much paper work for them to work out holidays !
They just seem to employ people part time apart from supervisors and manager roles which they knocked me back on why I apply for them even though I've been there for years. I have looked at transfers and its part time at other stores too.
My point is that I had to leave my full time job role due to health reasons and now am on less money and not on full time hours!
I feel it is there responsibility to give me more hours at least instead of employing new staff all time. I am not earning enough what I need and am struggling. Plus there's no hope finding new job as I have been looking. It's been like this for over a year now. They also told me to stop appliying for internal vacancies for the hours because they want someone that will be interested in just the job not because they want the hours !!
I feel that I am been forced to leave really, if / when another full time opertunitie comes up for me I will have to take it.

I know it isn't fair but I think they could do it if they wanted to, so if I were you, I'd look for fulltime elsewhere. I would also keep it quiet that I am looking.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

A lot of supermarkets don't have full-time positions, they have lots of part-time staff instead. They don't have to give you more hours or make your position full-time just because you are struggling.
I agree with the previous poster, you need to start looking for full-time elsewhere.

Unless you are covered by the Equality Act, I would agree with the others - they do not have to go out of their way to accommodate you. However if you do have a disability it *may* be reasonable for them to find you more hours on a day shift.0

OP, is it possible for you to keep the hours you are doing now and ask for some at night aswell? Not perfect but also not impossible to manage.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

I currently work evenings, they won't let me have any more contracted hours, its just over time when available, and as all general staff are on part time its a fight for over time when it is available.0

I presume that the employers prefer having more part time staff because it saves them a lot of Employer's National Insurance (though I would imagine this saving may be offset by the additional management of more people)0
