NHS superannuation pension query

Options
Hi.

Have a question, no idea if anyone here can help, but getting info elsewhere seems very difficult.

My mother is 73, worked for the NHS as a nurse from 1958-1975 and paid into the superann pension scheme throughout that time. She never claimed either a lump sum or weekly pension at any time. She's never had any money in relation to what she paid in. She saw an ex-colleague recently who was staggered that she didn't claim her pension at the age of 60.

My mother left nursing in 1975 to bring up the kids and never returned, nor had any further employment after that or made any further pension contributions.

Question is...has that money gone forever? Could some or all of the back money be claimed by her now? I've told her not to get her hopes up...but I am also staggered that she didn't claim anything.

Any info much appreciated.

I shouldn't think it's gone forever so the best thing to do is get in touch with NHS Pensions and find out.

It looks as though she should have claimed when she was 60. http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Pensions/Claiming.aspx

She should get in touch with NHS as soon as possible.

Thanks for the replies. Yep, been in touch with NHS today. Guy I spoke to seems to think she'll definitely be able to get something but she's on a low income and in receipt of both income support and housing benefit, so I'm guessing that's going to complicate matters and may mean she's actually better off not claiming her superann pension, unless any lump sum due is substantial.
