Most locks offer little or no real security and are little more than an inconvenience to the committed thief. Check out these locks, all of which are either Sold Secure or Thatcham approved.

Of course you should still use a lock (the best you can afford) but don't have too much faith in them.

Very true.....all you can do is do your best to make your bike less attractive so the thief looks elsewhere.

I have heard people say that using two different types of lock provides slightly better security because different types of lock require different tools to break them. I have no idea whether this is true or not, but (on the principle that it can't do any harm) when hubby and I leave our bikes somewhere unattended all day each bike has 4 locks on it: my Kryptonite U lock through my bike, the bike stand and his bike, and a thick armoured cable lock through both bikes and the stand. Repeat with hubby's identical locks...and that's probably about as secure as it gets.

But its one of the things you accept if you use your bike for transport....if a thief really wants it and has the right tools then no lock is 100% secure. That's why both our bikes' frame numbers are also listed on immobilise.com and they are insured - just in case ;)

This is my main lock of choice
prefer the chain for flexibility of things to lock to (heavy though!)

One day it dawned on me that locking up a £2500 bike with a lock bought from Poundstretcher might not such a good idea... So I bought a Kryptonite Evo 4 lock for about £50. It's not THAT heavy and does come with the option of mounting it to the frame :)
