Manchester Piccadilly to Deansgate

I am hoping to attend a travel talk at STA travel, Deansgate Manchester. The talk starts at 7pm until around 9pm and i'm just trying to my journey.

I was thinking of getting the train to Manchester Piccadilly from where i live as it will be much cheaper and less hassle than driving. How easy is it to walk to Deansgate from Piccadilly station and how safe at night?
I am a lone female but pretty streetwise just not that familar with Manchester. Don't really want to pay for a taxi unless i have to.

Any advice appreciated.

My boyfriend lives in Deansgate, whenever I go to visit him I don't get into Piccadilly until just before midnight, and he will always take a taxi to meet me at the station, and then we get a taxi back, because he doesn't think it's safe to walk through Manchester late at night. No idea if he's being paranoid or whether there's any truth in it, but I'll take him at his word! (There was some sort of police chase going on last time I arrived :rotfl:)

It's probably about a 20 minute walk depending on where you want to go, so at 7pm you might be alright. There is also a train station in Deansgate, about 5 minutes ride if you change at Piccadilly. My train arrives too late for me to have ever tried getting it, but I'm sure it would be safer than walking and cheaper than a taxi. Deansgate itself is an okay area, so walking from the station there you should be fine.

On Google maps it looks like it's only a few yards from that travel agent

There's a free bus called metro shuttle from right in fromt of Piccadilly which goes right past STA - you want the number 1, but it only runs til 7pm. If you ask the driver they'll tell you when you are in deansgate.
Its an easy walk back straight down market street but if you are nervous get a taxi for ease - there's a rank at top of market street and wouldn't cost too much.

I would think you will be fine. I did this walk at 8pm a couple of weeks ago. Manchester city is a busy, heavily policed area. Walk out of the station down the slope and follow your nose down the main road all the way down to Deansgate, depending on what part of Deansgate you going to. The place is heaving with commuters, shoppers, theatre goers, residents etc at 7pm.
I live in Manchester and believe it or not it's quite a safe place to wander in.
My youngest daughter, until recently worked at a city centre hotel and quite happily caught the 11.30pm bus home after a late shift.

There is the tram too which will take you from Deansgate station to Piccadilly. If you buy a train ticket from within greater Manchester to the city centre tram travel in the city centre is included, otherwise you would just need to get an adult return ticket which is £1.40 according to the website.

You are aware Deansgate Station is about the same distance from STA as Piccadily Station, so that wouldn't really solve the problem.

It's a 10 minute walk from Piccadily to STA - straight down Market Street, a very busy high street. There's absolutely no need for a taxi or even to take a bus, just walk.

I agree with JQ above, walking is probably the easiest way and is as safe as any other city. Market street will still be full of people some shops don't close till 8pm. I would walk there without a second thought, but thats easy for me to say, I live here. Good luck x
