Rents, debts and the cost of living...

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct forum for this posting but I need to get it off my chest so here goes!!!
To live in a modicum of comfort I am paying close to £550 PCM (all inclusive) for a largish room in a terrace house in a nicer part of town...
This accounts for over a third of my take home pay with the rest going to food and debt repayments.
I am on the council waiting list for a council property and have been told that I would be eligible for a 1 bedroom property.
I have been on the list for several years and apply on-line each week but every week I get nowhere.
I am probably never going to be able to afford to buy my own property and as I'm now in my mid thirties would really like a place of my own with the security of knowing that the owner isn't likely to sell the property and let me know at relatively short notice - I just want a home!
In the last week I have seen a new complex of flats start being moved into (I applied and missed out) with everyone being either single mums or migrant families.
Being a (slowly) ageing, single white male on an average wage who is seemingly entitled to no benefits or priority - what is there for me here anymore? All I seem to do is work, pay someone else's mortgage, sleep and get older...
Rant of Joe Average over.

Pay of your debts, save a deposit, buy a place, don't blame single mums and migrants.
There, sorted.
People with £1650 take home pay shouldn't be on council house waiting lists anyway.0 -
you may wish to post over on the debt free wannabe board and gain some help with dealing with your debts and managing your money0

Move somewhere significantly cheaper. Down here in the south I'm paying what you are for half a two-bed with a garden, garage, bathroom to myself and attic. You're paying way over the odds.0

It's nice to have people to blame but you spend over £1k/ month on food and servicing debt.
Plus all your debts are all with lenders that will be charging you an arm and leg in interest.
I think your problems may be more about your money management skills and overeating than immigrants and single mothers.
Why not try the debt free wannabe board?0 -

It looks like you have around £15k's worth of debt. No matter how many migrants and single mums there are, that's your biggest blocker at the moment. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

You don't know where he's living and you don't seem to be accounting for the fact it's all inclusive (unless you're claiming that is what you're paying all-inclusive?).
There is a decent chance he could spend a bit less though including all bills I'm not sure it'd be as much as you're claiming.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0 -
Come on guys, the poster came here to let off a little steam not asking for an in depth critique of every detail; everyone should be allowed to vent once in a while if that's what they need

In a lot of ways he is right. It does suck that people who screw up the most are often 'rewarded' with the most, and swiftest, support by the state. Unfortunately that's the price you pay to stop kids paying the price for their parents mistakes.
You might have a hard graft ahead of you to get rid of the debt and get a property of your own but that doesn't mean it isn't worth doing or that it can't be done. Too many people in your situation just stick there head in the sand and hope it'll all go away, which obviously it doesn't, so I hope you don't.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Can't fathom why OP is on the council list if he is well able to afford housing?!0
