I'd like to move to London for work

As my thread title says, I would like to move to London for work. At the moment I'm living in an area with very few jobs and I would like to try and see if moving to London would be a good. However, from what I read on-line, the main problem with living in London is what seems to me to be the high accommodation costs. Are there any people on this forum which have made this move? What kind of accommodation should I be looking for? I would imagine that in my line of work at the level I'd be looking at I would be earning between 30 - 35K. There are people working in London who earn a lot less than that. How to they get by? Any comments welcome.

AP007,
Thanks for the reply. What kinds of accommodation would these people likely have? Bed-sits or? How much would they cost per month? Thanks.0 -
Search for house shares and rooms for rent on gumtree to get an idea of prices. Apply for jobs and move once you get an offer, and you know what the salary is.0

Why don't u just get out primelocation/rightmove and have a look in the area your considering renting in?People don't know what they want until you show them.0

No real point doing that until the OP gets a job then they could be traveling zones 1-6 costing a fortune!Kayalana99 wrote: »Why don't u just get out primelocation/rightmove and have a look in the area your considering renting in?We’ve had to remove your signature. I find most people house share in London, especially when they first move to London. But if you get a job earning 30k you may be able to afford your own place in a rougher area or live in a house share in a nice area.
It's all about location. East London from zone 2 onwards is a lot cheaper than North and West. South London is reasonably priced, but depending on where you live the transport isn't as good. Few tubes, it's mostly national rail, tram and a some overground that covers most of South London.
I've only ever lived in North West London, and you'll be looking around £600 month for a decent house share in zone 2/3 with about £100-£130 travel a month if you work in Zone 1. Always consider what zone you live in and how easy it is to travel to the job. No one wants to have to get 3 different tubes each way! When you get a job find out what tube line(s) it's on and look for places on the same line.0 -
You don't say your current situation and age but if you're young then I'd say a house share may be the way to go, you'll make friends and your bills won't be so costly,. It'd also allow you to live in a nicer area of London rather than a grotty one although all areas have nice and grotty areas!!! Be warned though, don't get disheartened looking for a place, it is a landlord's market and you will view places that you would think a rat wouldn't live in, flat/house viewing in London opens your eyes!!0
