Hi All
I'm looking for a new sewing machine suitable for a beginner (that would be me).
Found two brother machines that seem to fit the bill - what do you think:
Can't post links yet so they are:
Brother XL-2620
Brother XN1700
Thanks

Why do you want a new one? If you're a beginner I'm guessing that you don't really know what you want out of a machine yet - as your skills develop you will find yourself leaning towards certain features and away from others. Cheap modern sewing machines can cause more problems than they fix, and misbehave so badly that the person who bought them doesn't enjoy sewing and stops trying. They think it is their own fault when really it is because the machine is of poor quality or made of flimsy parts.
I'd recommend to any beginner to buy a used machine from a well-known manufacturer (e.g. Brother, Elna, Singer), one that used to be considered near the top of the line from that brand if possible. And ideally it'd be mechanical, not computerised, and made mostly from metal. Those machines are workhorses and can easily be serviced at home. Once you grow out of that machine then you can save up and buy whatever it is that you know will suit the way you sew.0
