forgotten debt...dont worry or pay up

Hi,

I had about 10k on a credit card which doesn't show up on my credit record at checkmyfile.co.UK. all my other historic credit card and previous debts do at all my previous addresses. I'm on the electoral role at my new address , have been for over 2 years. Old cc registered at my ex's address ( she has since moved).

Is it possible this debt is "lost"??.. I'm trying to partially settle my other debts now, do I need to seek them out to fess up, or shall I let sleeping dogs lie??

I can't understand why in theory wouldn't find me if they were looking and still recognised the debt.

Thks

When did you last pay/acknowledge the debt?
    What will your verse be?

  • I was paying a DMP, this debt had the biggest slice of the payment. I stopped about 12 months ago intending to partially settle , all the other lenders still sent me statements during this time (on the DMP) and afterwards . its like they have given up. BG once did this with a direct debit for 400 I queried it bank returned money and BG never came back to me for it.

So I know mistakes can happen. Its not like I'm hiding or otherwise off grid !!

If they're not writing to you, I'd leave it alone for now.

Wait till they come knocking, not literally, and see what happens. Nothing to worry about till then.

  • Hi,

My partner is concerned they might come knocking and say you now owe say £16k because of all the fees and accrued interest and that it might be best to proactively approach them.

I'm feeling more like let sleeping dogs lie, I just can't get my head round why they haven't found me because my credit file has absolutely everything else I've EVER had but this....

Thanks for all the replies to date. It's the whole "if it isn't on file, then it doesn't exist " concept I'm wondering about.

If you've already been on a dmp, interest/charges should have already been frozen. Credit card companies are not as bad in this as say catalogues. It is possible that the debt has been sold on to a third party and, if so, they'll be in touch, whoever they are. It's also possible that this has gone to sleep somewhere. If the former then you can start F&F negotiations if they get in touch within the next 5 years. After that they can get lost as it will be unenforceable.
  • OK many thanks, will leave alone for now I think.
