Where should I advertise as a proofreader?

For quite a while now I have been proofreading assignments and theses for family and friends, but would now like to make a wee bit of money doing it.

I have advertised on Gumtree, but would like to put up a flyer in local colleges and the university.
Has anyone else done this? Do I need to contact someone in particular at these type of institutions? I have a CELTA qualification and currently teach English, but will be having surgery in a couple of weeks, so will be unable to work for a few weeks, and then I will have the summer with no work either.

You could try linkedin and see if there are any relevant groups that you could join.
  • You could also have a look on sites such as elance.

OP, your best bet would be through people you know. Networking. However, as you're about to have surgery and not in a position to go smarming people for business, Plan B would have to be to use the online freelance websites.

There are actually quite a few places you could offer your services

    elance
    odesk
    people per hour
    fivver
    craigslist

Remember you do not just have to target people in the UK. Many companies would appreciate someone who charges a reasonable price and whose first language is English. Micro workers are what most online companies are using now so find a micro worker site that suites you and build up your profile.
