help baliff coming today

recently due to unforeseen circumstances my father in law was made homeless and now spends some nights at mine and some at his daughters until he can sort himself out. yesterday a bailiff turned up at my door for my father-in-law for unpaid council tax the bailiff has told him they will be back at 5pm today to remove goods from my property he explained that nothing in the house belongs to him only his clothes but they said it did not matter they would take it anyway unless i could provide receipts but obviously i dont keep endless amounts of reciepts to prove it what can i do now this is nothing to do with me and dont understand how they can take my stuff he isnt on the tenancy agreement please help me im so worried

    The standard advice would work here - do not let them in. They are not allowed to force entry unless they have previously entered and 'levied' goods. So if they can't access goods, we don't have to have the argument about who owns what.

    Keep doors and windows closed and locked. Park cars elsewhere. If you have to have a conversation with them do it from an upstairs widow or through the letterbox

    Because Council Tax is a priority debt for which imprisonment is a possibility, your father in law should get advice on his debts. It may be that if he owes less than 15k, a debt relief order would be suitable. Alternatively, he may be able to come to an arrangement to repay the council over a period of time.
