My local indy garden centre is selling 4 x 50l recycled peat free for £10. Can't remember the brand but one bag was split open and it looked very fibrous but can't be much worse than the Bowers almost 100% wood chips I had last year :(.

Are you sure you did not over water the compost, water + nutrients + light = algae

It was in the sack like that. And it wasn't algae.

I have been to the Garden Centre and to Morrisons today and bought 3x56L Growise for £10 (GC) and 4x40L Morrisons own MPC for the same price.

The Growise looks and feels more like soil and the Morrisons is more fibrous and has got some peat in it. I think I prefer the consistency of the Morrisons. It just seems as though it'll hold more water and probably there'll be more air in the pots. I'll use the GroWise in containers on the ground and the Morrisons which I think is lighter and less likely to compact in the hanging baskets.

It'll be interesting to see if there is really any difference at the end of the day.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

I've just got 3 x 50L bags of B&Q's Verve multi purpose compost (with John Innes), £3 a bag, best compost I've had in years.

Bulrush Professional 60Litres 3 for £10 that's nice and fine, bought mine in Buyology Swansea last year and this year. The Range has some 3 for £9 think its 60litres but don't quote me, dark fine compost, (one bag was split that's how I know)

I have bought literally hundreds of bags of B&Q's compost over the years. I still buy some now, but not in quantity.

They've varied somewhat over the years, as has the recipe, but I mix my own stuff using this as a base, so not much of a problem.

Other composts I've tried around the same price point haven't proved any better, and some have been truly appalling.

Pity B&Q don't deliver for free any more. Those days are gone forever! :rotfl:
