Home insurance payout

In a nut shell my dilemma is as follow, my conservatory was damaged beyond repair by the snow. The insurers told me to get three quotes. I went to one guy, who works for a large company, who said he'd give me two quotes, one from his company and a fabricated quote which would be dearer than his true quote. I did approach a third company but didn't hear anything for a few days, in the meantime, the first guy gave me his quote and the fake quote, and on the same day I also heard the insurers only needed two quotes so off the quotes went. Since that time a third quote did come in at a lot cheaper price. The insurers now held the first two quotes and were happy to payout out on the second highest quote. The cheque has since been paid out to me. So would the dilemma is, am I right to go with the cheaper quote off the guy who was genuine or do I go with the guy who was a little corrupt in getting the deal?

So, you submitted a fake quote and then wonder if you should use the corrupt guy?

That sounds rather bad doesn't it when put like that, I guess the big company in question are desperate for work, also the ghost quote they provided was off a genuine company who they work hand in hand with, so you could say the ghost quote was kinda genuine in the fact only to guarantee the lower quote won, it's rather a twisted web

No you couldn't. It was faked so a high quote won, as evidenced by the third (genuine) one which was cheaper.

I hope your insurer doesn't realise this as it would be viewed as fraud (by you). In fact, I hope your insurer does realise.

It'd no doubt be viewed as fraud big two larger companies too no doubt. Regardless I'll probably go with the lower priced guy who is more deserving of the work

There is a flip side to this coin.

This guy or company is willing to help you commit fraud. I wonder where he will stand when you have problems with the work/repairs later on?

Here's the bottom line tho, am I ok to go with the cheaper guy even tho I've been paid out on the dearer one. Is it my choice whom I employ?

Yes. (You can do what you like with the money)

Though don't you need a receipt to get the VAT reimbursed (or are all the quotes from non vat registered firms?)
