I suppose one way around a slow cooker being on all day is to put it on a timer switch and set it to come on about mid day.:beer:0

You wouldn't have the expense of getting a new one necessarily.
If you clean up the old one and test it, you might find it's still perfectly ok. I know some OS'ers have got their slow cookers from boot fairs and even freecycle. They are so popular that even new, you should be able to pick on up without investing too much. And really, investing is the word!! You can get cheaper cuts of meat which are perfect for slow cooking.
As for leaving it unattended ... they are designed to be left unattended.
But the risk is like any item you leave on while you are out - PC's, electric clocks, dvd players, sky boxes.
If you were to use your oven instead of the slow cooker to have a hot meal awaiting you when you get home, the risks would there too
Things like Jacket pots are very safe in the oven, but I take your point that the oven is generally more dangerous than a SC:beer:0 -
If you prepare your veg and keep in covered sauspans before you go to work and set the oven timer so the ovens hot when you walk through the door. You can have a hot meal ready in 30 minutes.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

I figure that as I would take the jackets out of the oven when cooked, then try re-heating the next day, that is possibly where I have gone wrong.
So, I'm going to try just undercooking them and see if that works better. Queenie, I like the idea of mixing stuff with the jackets then freezing, I will give that a go too.

Slow cookers are perfectly safe Phil. No more dangerous than leaving a fridge or freezer plugged in.
They are soooo cheap to run, tenderise any tough, cheap cuts of meat and make such tasty meals. Totally recommended!0 -
i have used my timer but not for a whole day, have set it if we were going out for the afternoon.
have done it with things like lasagne and tuna pasta bake, chicken casserole.
its great to walk in the door with children who are hungry and just dish up!!0 -
I often use the cooker on timer. It is brilliant for setting up just before the afternoon school run, so that I know food will be ready once swimming lessons etc are finished. Never had a burnt meal yet. I have even done a roast with the timer, and jacket potatoes always fine.That's Numberwang!0

Our breadmaker comes on during the night. I didn't start using it till I had an adaptor that has a safety cut out for power surges as I don't like leaving electrical equipment on at night either. But how many people leave their sky box on all night? I use the slow cooker during the day so I'm not worried. It's no different to leaving the washing machine on.

Time to mention what put me off - a friend cooked a casserole in oven while she was out on timer, she returned to fire engines at the door, had gone dry pressumably and set on fire. My SC has never lost the moisture etc so feel it's much safer.One day I might be more organised...........
