First of all, my condolences on the death of your mum - it must be hard for you, when you've been her carer for so long. Now some questions before we can give you much help.

    1. What has your mum left - is it just your home?

2 .Is there still a mortgage on the property?

    3. Are there any other debts?

    Yes, just the house.

It's a secured loan on the house. No mortgage.

    No other debts.

Tbh. It's my worst nightmare. I lost my mum, and immediately (two days later) carers allowance stopped. I spent Christmas with no gas, electricity or food and had zero income from December 3rd to January 19th. Having just spent 6 months watching my mother fall in and out of comas. Suffer meningitis, a heart attack and a broken leg that wouldn't heal, all pretty much side effects from the cancer she then lose her battle to. All the while being able to do zero to help. I was less than prepared mentally to deal with it all. Her funeral was on what would have been her 73rd birthday. It hasn't been the best of years.

That shouldn't have happened. You usually get an 8 week run-on of CA payments after a death to allow for the transition.

More questions, I'm afraid - did your mum have PPI on the secured loan?

    2. What is a value of the house?

    3. Gas? Electricity? Council tax? Are they paid up to date?

Yeah. I know, they said because she was in hospital I wasn't entitled to the 8 week run on.

No idea what the value of the house is. Gas is in arrears. But I have a pre payment metre now and am paying it off. Electricity is up to date. As is council tax.

Rev, I'm so sorry to read your story and hope you can get through this difficult time as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Have you applied for reduced council tax now that the house is single occupancy?

The issue here is a cash flow one and the secured loan.

What is the interest rate on the loan?
What is the value of the house?

One thing on side is that you are a lot younger so any payment plan can be over a longer period than your mum could have.
Having an idea of what you might be able to pay will help guide a target loan/term
eg £3k at 10% over 5years is £64pm, a longer loan at lower rate would be less

Has the debt been frozen, this is worth looking at while in administration and a payment plan can be established.

Do probate when you can afford to pay it. I took years before I got around to probate.

This would be ok, if there wasn't an issue of a loan that is associated with the house which needs to be dealt with.
Target to be debt free: Dec 2015 (33 and debt free ;))
