I have always handed in all my forms to my employer so the HMRC should have corrected them long ago if I was underpaying. I now don't actually benefit from my pay rise at all, and I've been working very hard to earn it.

Unfortunately under the old style the HMRC do not get person's full earning for a tax year from each employer until the end of the tax year. So unless you kept your eye on tax with part time jobs, changing etc then you would either need to speak to HMRC or just be aware that it will be paid for somewhere sometimes.
As of this month all employers must report all pay and tax paid every single month so going forward this should be easier to keep an eye on (or not, we will see what happens once HMRC has something like 50 milion submissions in a week!) .

I don't think I was being over-sensitive, you could have just worded it better, that's all. I'd already been upset as the loss in finances has really messed up my plans this month (I've booked a trip away)- you might as well have said it serves me right. I thought I had done everything by handing all my forms etc, so it was just a bit of a slap in the face.

That being said, I do really appreciate the advice, thank you. My pay rise was £2500 - hence why I was so shocked that I'm now getting less. Especially with the new tax free allowance. Perhaps the pay rise hasn't come into affect yet, but I've received the formal letter and agreed it with my boss, so it should have.

    That is very strange.
You received just about £200 less then you should have.
If the tax overpayment was being taken out in one go, there would have been coding notice and you should have received that in the post.
Also both your old and your new employer would have to submit P60s some time ago for HMRC to be able to act so fast, which would be unusual.
Something is not right here... I would call payroll department and ask what caused the drop. Most departments will be able to have a look quite easily (depends on the size of organisation).

Are you sure there could be no deductions? Were you off sick? anything?

    .
I am sorry if I upset you.
In my defence, I thought you are a professional and an adult and I can speak to you as things are.
I didn't realise I have to sympathise and agree that payroll is useless department who do just wrong. Even though you could have been reffering to me for all I know (I might be the payroll in your company).
But genuinely, I am sorry. Next time I will be more careful.

Nope - I've had half a day off sick once about seven months ago, and a holiday two weeks ago for five days (I've still got another 14 days to take so it wasn't this, the boss lets payroll know if we're on holiday only if we're over our allowance to deduct as necessary). I don't have any benefits or allowances, just come into the office Monday to Friday 8.30 until 5.30, do my days work and repeat. Nothing through the post, only one letter in December from the SLC company saying they will automatically start taking payments this year.

I've emailed payroll and I'll let you know - I'm thinking it's a combination of they haven't implemented my pay rise yet, I've started paying back my student loan and I didn't pay enough tax last year.

The only thing that worries me is that if you started to pay the unpaid tax back you should have received coding notice..
Please let me know, I am now intrigued.

Bit of a rant really - my company pays on the 1st of every month (or thereabouts) and I've just been paid my first month of this financial year, which was £70 less than last month.

I know you don't have figures for this payslip yet but can you give the figures from your last payslip please? Also was the last payslip Month 12?

    You would need to give;

Tax code - I know you said 810L but was there a Mth1 suffix after it or not?
    Total taxable pay to date
    Total tax paid to date
Gross pay for that one month
Tax paid for that one month

    Hi all,

I've sorted it now, thank you for your replies. Email from payroll:

"I have checked your tax code and can confirm that it was incorrect, it should have updated to 944L. I have rerun your salary and, after the deduction of your student loan which came into effect this month, your net salary will be £1365.85"

    Phew!

    Good news!
Just remember if you underpaid that tax last year HMRC will still come after it at one point... be prepared.
