In a Pickle at Work

Hi, I'm a bit new to this so hope I give the right info to enable someone to hopefully help me.

I am 62 years old and was made redundant three years ago. OK, I'm nearer proper retirement than not but I did want to carry on working.

Anyway, I was on income based JSA up until last September and was just about to be transferred on to Pension Credits when I found a job. It was a bit unexpected as I had been trying to set up a little business. Well, I decided to take the job and now things have gone horrendous. I really can't stand the boss, he is making my life a misery, things have got so bad now that I am thinking about seeing my doctor, I think I am depressed. My wife, I know, is really worried about me.

My question is: As I am working, but was of pensionable age at my last birthday, am I allowed to give notice and be able to claim Pension Credits straightaway? Or, is it like it used to be, you can't leave a job of your own volition and start claiming any benefits, Jobseekers or Pension Credits, for instance. I didn't know if being of pensionable age makes a difference as I wouldn't technically need to sign on?

I don't want a looming old age being benefit dependent but it would help if I knew what my entitlement would be if I just gave notice at work. I could then look for another job with nicer people or look to set up my own business doing something or other.

I would really appreciate the knowledge and advice of anybody on the forum. I was planning to go to see my CAB office but with working it is really difficult and I can't get an appointment until 23rd May.

Many thanks, David
