Salary pay date

Not sure if this is in the right place but hoping someone can help. My husband gets paid monthly and his employers say its the first Monday of the month. So he got paid 1st April and will not get paid till 6th may. This is making life really hard for us and need to be paid the last day of the month. I've been told there is a new law saying you should have a pay date not day but cannot find anything online about this.

Can anyone out there help please.

If direct debits are a problem get them all moved to the 7th of the month as his pay will always have gone in by then each month.

Just work on the assumption that he will get paid on the 6th of every month and then on the months when he gets paid earlier (most of them), its a bonus.

Pay dates are a contractual matter and there are no new laws about this.

Many people are paid on 4 - 5 week cycle, some are paid on last Friday and some are paid on 1st Monday. You just need to budget for this and save a buffer for when you have the 5 weeks to live on. Make sure your DDs are set to come out after the 7th of the month to make sure the funds are there.

Just one small (!) issue. Pay day 1st April was period 12 of the last tax year whilst 06 May is period 2 of the new tax year so there could be some tax issues as, in theory, there has been no pay in period 1 which means that somewhere along the line the employer is not operating paye correctly.
  • Hiya,
There is some sort of new law as my workplace changed our pay day date this month to fall in to line with the new law too although we've been given a set date, rather than just the first Monday of the month.

I would agree, best thing would be to change DDs to 7th of the month so that your hubby's wages will be in.

Probably changed because the new RTI for tax is not happy with monthly being paid after 6th of the month as it is being paid in the wrong month, when doing it on paper they could fudge the dates.

Or have it that the bills paid at the end of the month come from what was received at the start of the month, or switch dd's to the middle of the month - chances are that you may need to double pay one month to get these in synch because of the cross over. e.g. my mortgage comes out on the 28th, i get paid the last day of the month, but what goes in on the 30th April is for what is coming out in May so never have such an issue. You just need to create a similar cashflow to handle this.

The actual pay date to tax date is quite meaningless since there is often a payroll period that applies to what is paid - e.g. overtime periods may run mid month to mid month or be a cut off X number of days before you get paid. and most payroll software will handle this in term of tax calculations etc..
