Two schemes running this week like the Arriva one already posted but they don't require you to have a smart phone.
Some of the Merseytravel routes listed are actually operated by Arriva North West. The 'C services' operate in Liverpool city centre so useful for visitors to Liverpool.

The campaign will show that everyone has a time when the bus really is the best way to travel, and for this one week you can travel free on the following services:
Route 159 between Aintree University Hospital and Walton Park
Route 265 between Halewood and Bold Heath
Route 181 between Heswall and Leasowe
Route 249 Huyton Circular
Liverpool City Centre Circulars / C Services
