Have you ever emigrated or relocated (within the UK)?

If yes, why?

In my home town, economic conditions are not so good. Not many jobs, combined with high house prices (and the housing stock is not very good either).

I am considering emigrating abroad, or relocating in the UK. Clearly it is not a decision to make easily. On the one hand, there are my roots. On the other hand, there is a better quality of life, a good job, a good house..

I relocated for university, years ago, if that counts.

I'm also in the process of planning to relocate again, for no other reason than I think I would have a happier lifestyle which would allow me to focus on health, family and some real 'me time'.

That said, relocating has never been something that I've considered an issue for me - I don't feel like I have 'roots' anywhere. Home is wherever I am.

OH finds the idea harder to grasp as he's the person that builds friendships for life no matter what happens, though he's also keen about our relocation because it moves him closer to his own family but will still allow monthly access to our current friends.

Different for everyone, I suppose. I'm a 'me person' so I could quite happily move abroad tomorrow. He might be happy relocating, but he'd never leave the country!

I've relocated and my OH relocated countries to be with me. It's not easy, and does depend on what you are going to eg do you have a safety net, and whether you have dependents.

    MONEY :rotfl:

Spent years moving round the country, resulting in a small increase in my income, so moved abroad 2 years ago - now earn 50% more than I was in the UK and pay about 1/3 of the tax I would if I was earning the same in the UK. :D.

And the best bit is I no longer have to pay for lifetime scroungers to live the Jeremy Kyle lifestyle.

Relocated to the South East in 89. Was just no work in Scotland. Then relocated again back to Scotland in about 02. Morbid as it sounds, my dad wanted to come home to die.

Yes. I've lived in various places in the Far East and now live in Switzerland. I'm in science and it's a global job, hence the need to move around. I don't feel any particular attachment to places and like to see the world, so this suits me fine! Maybe when I'm older I'll feel differently, but I doubt it...

I'm now in Switzerland and I love the place; beautiful scenery, international vibe, clean and safe (6-figure, tax-free salary helps too :D). OH is French and I met him when were working in the Philippines; he has the same attitude as I and I believe this is crucial, it just wouldn't work otherwise.

My advice would be to go for it, but you need to consider what skills you have and where they could be useful. You also need to have a plan, otherwise you'll find yourself in a similar situation to now, only in an unfamiliar place and without a support network of friends and family around you. Do your research, follow your plan and move - and if it goes Pete Tong, you can always go home again. It's not like it's a one-way ticket after all!
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)

    32 and mortgage-free :D

Have moved around within the UK a fair amount..... went up to Scotland for uni, met a lass and when deciding to move in together decided it would be better to go back to her home town rather than staying in Scotland as there were more prospects there.

Whilst working there got an exceptional job offer in London so moved for that. Then the wife wanted to go to university so moved out of London to be nearer to her studies and I commute into London.

The wife on the other hand has lived in several countries and moved around in each of them. In most cases the switch in countries was to experience different cultures etc and movement within the countries was for work or studies

Many years ago relocated twice in UK, promotion with same employer who paid for both moves plus additional financial help. However I understand such things no longer happen.

Yes, I recently moved from the West Midlands to South Wales.

Better jobs prospects, cheaper house prices, fewer people and cleaner air all contributing factors.

I relocated to Birmingham from Glasgow in 2003 then relocated to Manchester in 2008 now relocating to Edinburgh this month, all for wok related reasons.

The only thing I hate is the moving part but I have met some life long friends across the country.
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.
