in Cutting tax
Hi guys,
My local council (west dunbartonshire) seems very expensive compared to friends in other parts of the country ie I am paying £1189 pa for band B. Does anyone know of a website with a council tax comparison chart so I can see how my council actually compares with others nationwide.
Thank you,
Colin W Colclough

West Dunbartonshire IS expensive compared to others.
You need to compare only with other Scottish ones as the bands in England are different.0 -
Unfortunately, there are no council tax comparison sites - it would be a great idea if someone set one up to name and shame the bad ones!!!!
Anyway, your situation is repeated up and down the country - take the example of a London Borough Council (say Tower Hamlets) and compare it with a Nortwest BC (say Leyland/Preston or Blackburn) and you will see quite a bit of difference!!!!
By that I mean, council tax for a (say) band A property in London is cheaper than for a band A property in Preston/Blackburn!!!
That means, up north it costs more to run council services!!! ( it must be because of high salaries we pay up north compared to London!!!!)
Council Tax Sucks!!!!0 -
its probably more to do with the national bandings that were set in 1992. whilst the average band is a d on the scale, it is more likley that properties would fall into the lower bands in the northern areas, ie a 2 bed semi will cost more to buy in london than blackburn. The lower your average band is in your area the more tax you have to charge to collect the same as your southern counterparts.
so no conspiracy there then, despite for years speculation that said the opposite of the OP and that monies being raised in the south were being redirected by Central Government oop north.
This is of course, a southern rumour.....it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!! :rolleyes:0 -
not much use to you but the following site shows all councils in england.
