On call allowance. Experiences?

Dear All,

If you have ever had a job where you have been on call out of hours, how much have you been paid?

And what did you then get paid for actually having to respond to an out of hours request? Was it a fixed amount or double hourly rate?

Mentioning your actual job would really help me too. This is for an IT role but all experiences welcome.

Thanks in advance

  • Thinks ours is something like 25% of your normal rate when you're on call. If you get called in you get a minimum of 2 hours travelling time at normal rate, and a minimum of 2 hours working time at overtime rate.
  • That's great - thanks for replying.

    All other experiences welcome

My husband is in IT, and gets a flat 20% of salary payment each month. They do 1 in 4 and get no extra money over and above the 20%, no matter how much or how little work they do

On call starts at 6pm Monday night, until 9am the following Monday morning.

When I was in Sheltered Housing it was £50 call out charge + time and a half for hours spent on site. Nothing for being on standby though

It can vary a lot between companies. I work in security and repairs and previous companies have offered a flat rate of about £50-60 for attending a call out while others have offered a rate for being on 'standby' for the week and then an hourly rate for attending calls.

    IT Admin.

On a 1 in 3 callout rota. Flat fee is about £400 per month with additional callout overtime rates.
