Important Information - Supermarkets..

Hi,
I have read this forum with interest for a while, and still do, although have not made too many posts.
I just wanted to explain why I have now stopped shopping at tesco, and other supermarkets - and will be sending my clubcard (cut in half) to their head office.
I like to be careful when confronted with 'conspiracy theories' and the like...
but i seem to have read a lot on this, plus these links are quite convincing and seem to be backed up by a lot of good evidence.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3486838871531386599&q=supermarket+secrets
and I haven't seen this last one yet, but I imagine it's pretty similar
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-1381639014893922585&hl=en-GB
--Just wanted to also point out that these videos contain some scenes of severs animal cruelty (plus some cruelty to fruit and vegetables) - so be warned of these shocking images.
please check these out and find out the 'real' price of the items you buy..
some issues raised include,
environmental issues - flying cabbages out to eastern europe to be processed and then flying them back to be sold as 'local produce',
false labelling - selling factory farmed ducks as free range
wastage,
pesticide use and its effects,
animal creulty,
tax evasion,
poor overseas worker treatment,
you name it it's in there
plus FOR YOU MONEY SAVERS the local market is actually cheaper as I found out today...
Twelve English Organic Eggs = £2
Twelve Tesco Organic Eggs = £3.72
One Organic English Cabbage = £1
One Tesco Organic Italian Cabbage = £1.38 (so I am paying for air travel and packaging now, am I)
I think that the issues raised by Tesco (and importantly the other supermarkets are just as bad) - go far beyond environmental issues, and I will no longer support them, or stand idly by and while other people carry on in ignorance.
It's not choice - it's ignorance - I am asking people to make a moral decision based on these videos, because Supermarkets have not been honest with where our food comes from - and I for one want to act responsible in this world, with my actions AND MY SHOPPING, plus I wanted to know that what I put into my own body, and what I feed to others is SAFE and HEALTHY.
plus, we have also found out it's not actually cheap!!
Thanks for reading, I hope this effects some of you...and i hope you have the courage to stand up and tell others as well.

I don't think it's possible to say that every local store is squeaky-clean on all, or even any, of these issues, though I would be worried about flying cabbages in the High Street. And it's not possible to vet every little store to see if it meets your standards - maybe some of them are environmental villains. I've no idea what's on the videos but the fact is, sadly, that Tesco and the other major supermarkets screw down the suppliers and almost always provide cheaper food (though, obviously, you get the occasional bargain locally).environmental issues - flying cabbages
false labelling
wastage,
pesticide use and its effects,
animal creulty,
tax evasion,

The reason I use supermarkets as little as possible is because I don't want more local shops closed down and I want to have good suppliers treated better than Tesco etc treat them.0 -
im another thumbs up for the local shops and markets, i find the quality better than tescos and i spend less not using tescos. Also my fruit and veg shop is much cheaper than major supermarkets. I also hate the thought of there one day not being local shops and thus no choice but to use the big stores.0

If you want to be really worried about supermarkets, watch 'Whistleblower' tonight on BBC1!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6676345.stm0 -
It looks like this will be another Whistleblower programme with very little to say, stretched to fill the programme. A bit like most of the Panorama programmes they are currently churning out - little or nothing to actually tell us.
The clips on Breakfast this morning seem to back this up. A couple of incompetent staff, but not much more.
I could be wrong and will review my opinion when I've seen the full programme.
I've got a GREAT idea for a BBC1 Whistleblower investigation: An undercover investigation into the poor quality of programmes churned out by the UK's premier public service broadcaster.
But then the BBC wouldn't show that now, would they...British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
No, but ITV would!
