Change in Job Description and Hours

Can anyone advise where I stand with regard to change in job description and being asked to work additional hours?
I don't mind the chg in description so much, as I pretty much do all of it anyway, just will bear the main responsibility for managing the tasks from inception to completion.
However, I will have a problem in meeting the increase in hours as I have children and, instead of leaving at 4.00 (which actually is usually 4.30 by the time I leave), I will be required to work until 5.30 every day.
I took the job as it allowed me to get home in order that my youngest would not be home alone for too long, (he is 11). Now it seems I will have little choice but to work the extra hours or risk losing my job.
Has anyone been in the situation where they have objected to changes in their contract, and how did it work out for you?
