Work and Housing Benifit

Hi all, my first post here.

I am currently on income support and get HB also. I am single in my mid fifties and live alone. My question is if I were to come off of income support to do some part time work how much would I be able to earn before it effected my HB in any way ?

Thx in advance

On what grounds do you claim IS?
  • £76.70 (your applicable amount of £71.70 plus £5 earnings disregard).
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Hi benefits officer, how much would a family of 4 be allowed to earn, with two kids aged 7+4 please?thanks
  • Thank you very much for the reply. I claim IS because of long term health issues. I am not up on all the terms used and it might be something different.

I went for a medical and was placed in work related activity group recently, fair enough. But what is being offered to me there is actually making my condition worse. I get virtually the same per week as the £76 I am allowed to earn without losing my housing benifit so if I could earn that by my own means and in some way that suits my personal situation it is a win win isn't it ?

Housing Benefit is calculated on applicable amounts, eligible income and Local Housing Allowance rates.

For a couple with 2 children their applicable amount is made up as follows:-

    £112.55 - couple rate
    £65.62 - child 1
    £65.62 - child 2
    £17.40 - family premium.

    Total:- £261.19 per week.

A further £10.00 per week income is disregarded if one of them is working.

If working over 30 hours an additional premium of £17.10 is awarded so basically another £17.10 is disregarded,

Child Benefit is disregarded as income.

Tax Credits is counted as income.

So if working 30 hours or more then the household income is £288.29 or less then the same amount of Housing Benefit would be awarded as if you were still unemployed.

If either child is disabled or if either claimant is disabled and receiving Disability Living Allowance then the above figure would be different.

For every £1.00 income above £288.29 per week the eligible Housing Benefit would be reduced by 65 pence.

Wages are calculated after deductions of tax ni contributions and 50% of pension contributions.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

If the work is only 10 hours then still sign on and see if your normal social security benefits would continue - they will take earnings into account and pay a reduced amount of ESA I, JSA I or IS and HB would remain the same.

If wages too high to continue receiving any ESA I. JSA I or IS then Housing Benefit will then become means tested rather than passported (If a claimant gets ESA I, JSA I or IS then maximum eligible benefit is awarded and any other income such as tax credits and earnings is disregarded - If ESA I, JSA I or IS stops then all other income is taken into account).

If your current income is the same or just above your applicable amount then every extra £1 wages would mean a reduction of 65 pence Housing Benefit.

Each Local Authority runs their own Local Council Tax Support scheme with different criteria for qualifying so how the extra income would impact on your Council Tax would be dependant on how your local scheme operates.
