BR tax code

I was on the BR tax code for the whole of last year, after joining my current employer at the very beginning of April (something which I have only just noticed). Why would this be? Why wasn't it changed over the year? Whose responsibility is it?

I have therefore done the sums, and it seems that I will end up owing the tax office over 5k!!!! Not something I can afford!!! What are the settlement terms of paying back this money?

Thanks.

    probably ultimately your responsibility.

Did you hand in a P45 or fill in a P46 if you did not have a P45? You should have done one of these.

Presumably, as you say you owe over £5,000 you are a higher rate taxpayer? I can't say how HMRC would expect you to pay it back but perhaps best to get in touch and discuss it.
