mpg figures should be taken with a pinch of salt

leasing agreements usually have a mileage limitation

probably far cheaper to stick with what you've got, and drive slower, especially as the uni thing is a hope currently, changing cars, especially to a new higher valued leased car is rarely a way to save money

Thanks for this - I do often wonder about the MPG thing and have heard that the figures are overrated. Anything is better than what we are currently getting from our FR though. The uni thing is certainly a hope and a few hurdles to get through first (such as getting a place!).

As has been said above don't believe all you read about MPG car makers are known to over estimate what the vehicle is actually capable of.

I don't know what your income level is but looking at the amount of debt you have do you think you would pass the credit check that the car company will carry out.

If I was you I would be looking to sell the gas guzzler for a much more economical small car and if you got the market value sorry but that is plenty to buy a decent second hand car that will do while your husband studies and when he is finished if the debts are sorted then think of buying what you want and consider this as making do for now.

Hi - thanks for your reply. Take your point about the credit check because the answer is probably no, particularly with our levels of debt.

a longer journey, warmer weather, and improved driving style could have a dramatic effect on mpg.

Fact is you cannot afford a new car. Sell the one you have and buy a second or third hand older car that does better mileage. Why get into more debt for a new car. IMO you could buy a better older car than a new vauxhall mocha, which I personally think looks anything but lush!!

Hi - thanks for replying. I think the point I was making was that we wouldn't be getting into more debt doing it the way I described because it would be affordable by the time we needed to pay payments from our wages. Re the mokka, that is a matter of opinion and different opinions makes the world go round! What kind of car do you drive?

I hope you don't mind but I took a look at a review for you. Apparently it won't hold it's value and lease rates aren't very good on this car however due to the fact it won't hold it's value there are large discounts to be made for this car.

I think it looks nice, however it's not very economical and apparently noisy to drive.

Anyway have a look and make sure you're 100% before tying yourself into another long term finance situation. Do you really want yet another payment to make every month? If I were you I would buy a car outright with the £7500, but that's just me.

Either way I wish you luck :0)

Rav4 XTR bought brand new and 7 years old. Only costs have been fixed rate servicing and mpg seems o.k. Particularly as I only do short runs. I can understand you wanting to get your costs down as Uk fuel is expensive. I agree we can't all like the same thing!

I sold my Vauxhall petrol guzzler and bought a Citroen C3 for £2k.

I pay £20 a yr tax, Low insurance and i do the same journeys in this diesel car as i did in my petrol Vauxhall and i now use £100 diesel every 7 weeks, where as £240 it would cost me every 4 weeks in my vauxhall.

Sell current car. Buy bog standard second hand petrol 1.8 Ford Focus for 1k. Alternatively one of the old Nissan Micras is pretty much indestructible and will do respectable mpg. Drive at 60mph on the motorway.

Without wishing to sound harsh, with >50k of debt, sounds like you can't afford 'lush'. Cheap and cheerful is the way forward.

We do have decent jobs but tbh, it's more about us spending way above our means and not having a plan to pay it back!

Planning to buy a brand new car seems to be spending way above your means.

If you spend the £7.5k on an economical second-hand car you would have no car debt or monthly lease payments and better economy than now.

It might not be as economical as the Mokka but then you won't be paying out the monthly lease payments.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • Whilst we are talking of cars.

Could it be a good opportunity to buy a car with ZERO tax and low MPG.

Obviously the ZERO tax is without conditions, so you know once you have car under 100 emissions that you won't pay it, unlike the MPG discussion.

Whilst I'm saying that does anybody know of any used cars i.e. year 2010 that are exempt from tax due to emissions? I can't find much info on this.
