Based on both of your comments above gizmo and thrugelmir, do you think I would be better off opening a basic bank account elsewhere? I would prefer to have a debit card (no overdraft though obviously) but do you think I am unlikely to be approved?

Try the ones offering incentives atthe moment - halifax usually have something going an if you get refused then try the basic account.
