Hi
I have a question and i cant seem to find a proper answer anywhere so hopefully someone can help.
My brother works for a big company and has been there several years, he met a girl last year and they are moving in together.
His girlfriend lives about 60 miles away so when she moves into his house she needs to get a new job near him.
She applied for a part time position as a sales administrator at my bothers workplace on the advice of the manager, she went for the interview and all that stuff.
The problem is that the manager told my brother today in work that they are not going to offer her the job just in case they she splits up with my brother and decides to move back home....... 60 miles away.
Surely this is discrimination of some kind..... and therefore against the law?????
Just to add the girl who got offered the job is the daughter of another employee...
Can anyone offer any advice please?

You can pick X over Y for any reason you want provided it isn't a protected characteristic.
Protected Characteristics- Race
- Gender (and reassignment)
- Sexual Orientation
- Beliefs (akin to religious)
- Disabilities
- Age
Your case does not concern any of the above, you have no point of law to challenge the decision.0 -
I think that the employer would assess risks with every potential employee. If your brother and his girlfriend do split, it would most likely cause awkwardness and friction in the workplace and, if she did decide to relocate, they'd have spent time and money recruiting and training her only to have to do it again with someone else.
If they didn't split up, they have the risk of personal issues being bought into the office which, again, could cause awkwardness.
I can't comment on the legal stuff because I haven't a clue but I would assume this is how things would be looked at...
Would they really want to live and work together? I know the job market is tough and if she's relocating its nice to work somewhere where you know someone but it might be better in the long run for them to keep their work separate? This post isn't about their relationship, I know but, just thought I'd slip that in.Weight Loss3lb Lost32lb To Go:xmassmile 8 Week Christmas Cracker SW Challenge :xmassmile3lb/12lb0
