Hi

My daughter is getting married in September and starting to get very concerned about her wedding dress, so much so that she is thinking about cutting her losses and getting something else whilst she still has time but is concerned about losing her deposit.

June 2012
In June 2012 she ordered her £800 dress by placing a £400 deposit and was advised that it would be ready for December 2012 and to visit for alterations etc.

December 2012
In December she was advised there is a delay and it will now not be ready until January.

January 2013
Upon visiting the shop she was told unfortunately it had still not arrived but was assured it would be ready by March

March 2013
Yet another visit to the store and was now very concerned at being told that it will definitely be ready in late June and early July.

If she is told in July that actually they cannot get it at all she will be left with less than 8 weeks to find a new dress and is starting to get very concerned.

Before we visit the shop and talk about cancelling our order, I wanted to try and arm myself with as much about my consumer rights as possible to avoid being fobbed off yet again.

Any help or advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Did she sign a contract or something similar? If so you need to check the terms and conditions.
  • Just looking at the terms and conditions and they seem quite tight to be honest, apart from a section that states we should be able to get the dress to you within 14 weeks.

She has currently waited 43 weeks, so not sure where we stand.

Contact your local Trading Standards office (part of the council) and ask their advice.
  • Thanks, will contact them and let you know how I get on.
  • Get it sorted this week, just in case this shop goes under, and do they have wedding insurance, and/or did the £400 get paid by credit card, always pay for things like this with a credit card, even if you have the cash sitting in the bank, simply pay that amount when the bill comes in, you are protected then.
