I just did RTI and survived.

That's all really - I thought it was going to be really difficult (and the HMRC Basic Tools package isn't the most user friendly) - but in fact it was OK.

i've just done mine, had a few issues getting all the set up data right, all the tax office reerence no's etc a right nightmare to get right, but hey , got there in the end........ now it's all set up it should be straight forward , not sure what all this will achieve for hmrc, probably a logistical nightmare tryingt to deal with all the data

The basic tools is certainly not user friendly! I submitted my first one last week, firstly it wouldn't do it until I told it how many hours all my staff work. Then it took me nearly a week to work out how to get it to tell me how much to send to HMRC.

All done now though. Next month should be a doddle. Ho ho ho..

Ignoring the Universal Credits for now - what will it achieve?

Well, on the 5th of the month they are going to know how much every employer in the UK owes and by the 22nd of the month (or quarter) they are going to know how many of those employers are late. They can them chase them up quicker. As previously they only knew when the P35 was submitted.

They can also see who is on your payroll, what they are earning, what tax and tax code they are operating and adjust it accordingly for the following month straight away.

I agree, I don't find HMRC basic tools very user friendly.

I'm tempted to use one of the other free software packages, probably 12pay.

    Advantages: it looks simpler
Possible disadvantages: will it continue to be free? Will it continue to be updated? (e.g. with next years figures)

I don't really want to swap & change systems every year.
So should I struggle on and use HMRC Basic Tools (as that will surely be updated each year) or use a free third party software package?

I note people posting here so far are using HMRC Basic Tools. Perhaps that is the answer to my query?
  • Hello

My employer pays weekly so I've done 3 payrolls so far. I've found it pretty easy, I use Sage and they have been very proactive with lots of help and advice. But then there service isn't free of course, so they should be helpful!

i downloaded 3-4 of the free software to try out , i settled on brightpay , it is fairly straight forward to use , once you have entered all the details of employees and company details you are laughing , if anything is wrong it tells you what needs seeing to

hmrc have cut 37000 jobs since 2005 with another 10k to go by 2015 , so i would imagine they can't cope chasing up companies before rti never mind with the huge increase of data they are having to deal with now , they might have the info but i doubt they have the resources to deal with this effectively , so i imagine little will change in terms of increased revenues for them being

My accountant is moaning about the new system in general, and mentioning how difficult the HMRC software is to use!

I'm sure we'll get used to it, but I'm paying her for 191 hours last month (usually 100ish), so I'm really not impressed!
