You can do these sort of alterations quickly by hand and you won't need the machine out.
I am rather large in the chest department so I am a bit worried that hand stitching might not hold!!!

Hand stitching should hold if you put in several stitches to hold the fabric together on different parts of the seam. If it's just one point that's stitched then there is a lot of pressure on a small area of fabric. With several points stitched the 'pressure' is distributed along the seam and less likely to come apart."Does it spark joy?" - Marie Kondo

In the end I went down the route of buying a boot tube yes I know at 40!!!
Which means I can wear the dress in two ways. One as a dress and the other as skirt with a short cropped cardy.
My husband even thought it was all a dress and not two parts. So it now means I can wear it a couple of different ways.
