I feel like I am constantly asking questions on this board these days :rotfl:

Anyway, first pay slip of April. Taxed more than I thought, my code is 810L.

I am a new employee, but there is also a old employee who was on 810L last tax year, and this tax year, who is also being taxed more than they used to which is why I'm assuming it's wrong.

Am I correct in thinking this is still last years code, and we both need to be changed to 944L?
My employer is running a new business, I think this is the first time she's had employees of her own so wouldn't be surprised if she's not realised it was supposed to change.

Also I am bit confused - on some sites 944L is listed as the standard tax code, then others say it is for emergency tax?? Or is that only when it has M1 or W1 after it?

Anyway if someone could confirm what I should be on (for one job, basic allowance) it'll probably be easier if I can tell her exactly rather than leave it for her to mess up again!

Also is it simply a case of changing the code on the next payslip or are their forms to fill off? Does the employer need to do it or do I?

I think that your new employer should be checking for updates and applying them. You both should be on 944L. You are correct on your assumptions regarding the emergency code but anyone on a M1 or W1 code last year should be on a cumulative code at the start of this tax year.

944L is the basic personal allowance for income tax for people 65 and under.

This may be amended by HMRC for individual circumstances ie previous underpayments.
The only thing that is constant is change.
