Team Leader Training

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a training course in team leadership in a construction environment.

I've looked at all the courses I can think of, but these seem very much geared towards theory rather than practical skills.

I'm dealing with people who have worked their way up through the ranks, have a low level of education, not particularly brilliant literacy levels, and will be terrified of entering a classroom environment.

I really need a course that concentrates on practical skills rather than 'study' if that makes sense, but I'm struggling to find one.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks.

Could you speak to your local college and see if they can tailor a course to suit your needs maybe on your premises. They will be extremely used to terrified people.

Also, I don't know if there are any NVQ courses that would be any use?

    ILM Level two.

One of the ones I've looked at. It looks very good, but I think the prospect would appear a little daunting to those concerned. Do you have first hand knowledge of the course? If so, what is the learning environment like? What sort of people attend? How much written content is there?

Have you thought of contacting the CITB to see what they can suggest or offer?

  • Agree with Dunroamin above, alternatives are the CMI Level 2 in Team Leading. These are modular and can be done in bite sized chunks and added up to Awards, Certificates or Diplomas.

Also on my list, and the current forerunner - not necessarily for course content, but just because I think they will know the audience better!

    Also on my list!

Am feeling hugely reassured that I haven't missed anything obvious. Although slightly disheartened by how little there is out there for people who aren't pen-pushers!

    Thanks all for your help.

The CITB have been running construction based ILM for donkey's years; indeed I ran several when I was managing projects for them at least 8 years ago and it's good to see they are still running them.

I don't know what area you are in but they also have 'Training Groups' which are local companies who pool together to get courses run locally at cost - so look into that before you pay to go out of the area; sometimes if you call the local NCC rep for training they can squish you into any large companies who might be running them but who might have spare places. You don't have to go to Norfolk to do this!

I've just 'graduated' from my ILM Level 3 (2 marks off a distinction - grrr!), and found it really valuable. There are a lot of fairly heavy assignments, but the actually learning was really hands on, and the assignments were part work/experienced based and part a lot of research!

Sounds great, but I really can't see the guys I'm talking about being big on assignments or research.... that's exactly what I need to avoid - I'll never get them through the door!
