friends over for dinner - quantities help please

Options
Hi all

I'm having some friends over for dinner, total group size 6.

I'm on a tight budget and have a vegetarian coming too so plan is to do Mediterranean pasta, ingredients as follows:

Jar tomato pasta sauce

Courgette

Red Onion

Peppers

Tomatoes

Pasta (spirals or other kind)

Cheese for grating on top.

the problem is, I'm a lazy cook, when I do this for myself and OH i just buy a stir in Mediterranean sauce, so I have no idea on quantities for my group.

Can anyone help with how much of each item I should get, I know pasta is roughly 100g pp.

think i may have posted this in the wrong place before.

I'm no help I'm afraid but I'm sure you'd get a better response on the Old Style board :)

You need to do 3 times the amounts you would do for 2 of you!

for 2 of us i just use a dolmeo stir in sauce. So I know 3 times the amount of pasta but not sure on veg or jars of sauce as i've not done it this way before.

What I do is look at the raw ingredients and imagine 1/6 of that each. So for example onions. 1/6 of an onion is not much - I'd use two so everyone gets 1/3 of an onion. Courgette the same. I'd use two so everyone gets 1/3 of a courgette (roughly), or three so everyone gets half.

Same for cheese, grate as much as you would use for 1 person, then times it by 6

I'd do 3 x the amount of veg if that's the amount of veg you like, and same with the sauce, so 3 jars of sauce. But would probably be cheaper to use a large jar of passata and some herbs ... that's basically all Dolmio is.
  • if it wasn't so expensive i'd do take out. I hate cooking at hte best of times, but I cant invite them over to see my new home and then not feed them.

a few people dropped out which i'm happy with else i'd have been cooking for 12 i dont think my stove or pans would have coped with that.

I know exactly how you feel - I don't enjoy cooking at all, and always feel under pressure when we have people round, especially as many of them enjoy cooking. What about something like a tuna pasta bake, there are several recipes on the internet but you can't really go wrong and can throw in pretty much anything. You can prepare it all in advance and then just stick it in the oven when they arrive.
  • 100 grams pasta per person. Dont forget the garlic bread and a salad as its a great way of bulking a meal out at little cost :)
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, its just possible you haven't grasped the situation ;)
