Android phone won't connect to wifi

I've had a Galaxy Ace 2 for a few months without problems Yesterday I noticed that it wasn't connecting to wifi here at home. I don't use it on wifi a lot but it's nice to have it for the occasional download.
Anyway I went to the EE shop where I got it and they checked it and was told there were Android updates waiting to be downloaded. I was advised that it may take a while and it would be best to do it at home.
Back home I tapped on the update thing and a dialog box said the updated would be installed as soon as I connected to wifi - which is the problem in the first place. The update prompt then disappeared so I can't do anything about it even with the mobile network.
Searched the net for troubleshooting and did the following:
Powered off, took off battery for 40 seconds, restarted. No joy.
Popped out, went out of range, long tapped on my address, tapped on "forget network". Back in, rejoined with password and stuff. Keep getting on my network "connecting", "authenticating" then "disabled". So no joy again.
Switched off my router at the mains for 15 seconds. Same thing.
Any ideas anyone, before I go back to the shop?
EDITED to add: I also checked the proxy setting on it, it's clear.

Strange that. I would say hard resetting your android phone then try connecting to the wifi. Or!! it could be simply changing a setting such as the type of security although majority of the android phones I have used work fine on the wpa-psk2 security mode so you shouldn't have problems. Also after resetting your device, reset your modem/router to it's original factory settings and then try connecting without any modifications done to the router/modem. Let me know how it goes, happy to help anytime.0

You could try connecting to a free WiFi service such as The Cloud or O2 in a coffee shop, pub or store.
If you can do that then it rules out problems with your phone. You can also download the outstanding updates while you are there.0 -

That's what I thought as soon as the update option disappeared with the notification that the phone had to wait for the wifi connection. However, the EE shop couldn't connect to their wifi, which is when the assistant found the update notification on my phone and thought it might be that.Be careful who you open up to. Yes I have a wpa-psk2. Just to know, how do I do a hard reset?
I'm loathe to mess with my router in case then it screws up my computer connection which I need for my work.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

What router do you have? Better still tell me your isp and give me the model number then I can guide you on how to reset it to factory settings.0 -

Thanks but before doing that I'd rather try an outside wifi and see if I can download the updates.
I'm working from home right now as well as sniffing round the net, and I need the computer connected for the rest of the evening so I'll have to leave all this router thing for another time. I have a Netgear, about 3 years old.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
