Advice from Dentists regarding replacement crowns

I had crowns fitted in 2006/2007 to my front teeth and since then the backs of the crowns have broken at least 3 times. They have been repaired on each occasion. My dentist tells me I have a heavy bite and has offered to replace the crowns privately. She has suggested that the replacement crowns have metal backs possibly gold but said that the cosmetic effect is as good as porcelain. What do you think?

If the crowns need replacing and if you see the dentist as a nah patient then this can be done on the nhs.

Metal backed crowns are much stronger but can be a little less translucent than all porcelain crowns. This can be a problem if just replacing one crown but doesn't tend to be such a problem when replacing the lot.

Metal backed crowns need a bit more tooth removed at the front but will not in general, crack.

As brook has mentioned, a metal backing may cause a slightly dull or grey show through. Gold gives a slightly better appearance as it gives the tooth a warmer colour, resembling the natural colour of teeth better. However this option is unlikely to be offered under the NHS.

at the end of the day, it's all down to the skill of the dentist, and the technician making the crowns. Generally the more experienced and skilled technicians work in private labs.

Many thanks for your replies. I think I may go for the gold option if it gives a better finish just a bit concerned that I will be losing more tooth to accommodate this type of crown.

It will be around 0.6 mm of tooth on the front surface only!

Has your dentist ruled out bruxism/tooth grinding during sleeping, or any other habits such as nail/pen biting?
