Do I have to wait for a letter from HMRC inviting me to submit my return? or can I just do it online, I am registered and everything, I went on the website but there is no tab for "file your return"

I don't believe you have to be invited. I think you can do it online as soon as the new financial year starts (April 6th 2013).
I did mine a fortnight ago.0 -
Choose 'tax return options' from the left hand menu. 2012/13 comes up by default. It would be odd if 'file a return' was not an option at this point.0
