Previous Employer Help

Not sure if I am in the right section, so apologies if not.

I moved jobs last year and when I left my previous employment they asked if I wanted to carry on the life insurance they had - I said OK, nothing happened and I forgot about it.

Just got an email from them they have just realised that they have been paying for the past 9 months and want a refund of payments.

I've asked them to provide information about the policy, terms and validity, together with proof of payments.

They are looking for over £1000 (it was critical illness cover as well) which is a lot to pay in one go. If all above board would I have to pay in one go or could I pay in say three payments? I'm not sure where liability for this rests, was it their duty to transfer or mine?

Would appreciate any guidance or advice you can offer. Thanks

  • That sounds strange, surely they would have transferred the policy to your name if you left. Did you make a request for them to continue covering you in writing, do they have anything in writing?

If you did not claim on the insurance or acknowledge your desire for them to continue paying for the policy on your behalf in writing then how do they know you did request it and it wasn't an error on behalf of HR?

I would have thought the employer should have put the offer to transfer in writing and the insurer should have acknowledged and approved. Probably giving you the opportunity to compare alternative cover/prices before agreeing to take over in writing.

Is an actual reaction to my posts, so please don't rely on anything I say. :)
