Cancelling gym membership

I'm currently on a rolling monthly membership with Virgin Active, meaning I can cancel at any time, but according to their website I need to tell them before the 17th of the month. Why do they need a 'notice period'?
I am moving so I won't need the membership next month so I could just cancel the direct debit and not use the gym, but I don't want them to start chasing me for unpaid money.
What shall I do?

They will chase you for unpaid money if you simply cancel the direct debit. You do need to inform them (however they state in their T&Cs that you should - usually in writing) that you wish to cancel.
So is your contract 1st of the month to 1st of the month but you have to cancel by the 17th? That's actually better terms than most - mine had to give a month's notice so I had to make a quick decision on 27th Feb I think it was whether I wanted to cancel or not as if I'd waited until March started I would have had to pay for March and April if that makes sense.0
