What there is a shortage of is bungalows, we have an aging population yet planning departments want developers to throw as many homes as possible on leading to the 3 story type we see today. When was the last time a developer built an estate of bungalows?

Bungalows take up too much space.

Plus there are planning laws which make it difficult to build one dwelling like that on a patch of land.

Therefore a council is more likely to give planning permission for a two storey building that can be split into a ground floor and 1st floor flat than a bungalow.

Buildings have to be adaptable for disabled use so doors are now wider, light sockets lower and power points higher than in older housing.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
