Can HMRC's send tax refunds using direct bank transfer

Hey,

I'm just curious as I've had to write to HMRC's to request payment to my bank, I provided them with all the required information

Name
Address
Sort Code
Account no
Swiftbic
Iban

but when I spoke to them on phone was told a cheque would be sent to my bank which could take up to 14 days ? I guess I didn't specifically state I wanted direct bank transfer but can they do it ?

Edit: Just received a phone call to state payment has been issued via cheque to the bank with 7 day turn around.

  • Posters on the Cutting Tax board seem to have come to the conclusion that Self Assessment refunds can be paid electronically but Paye ones can't although a cheque for these can be sent to your bank as you have described.
