Setting up a household

If everything goes OK I will complete my flat purchase on June the 22nd. this means that I need to set up a new household. When I sold my half of my previous house in Belgium, I sold it including all furniture because it was not worth bringing it over to England.
I now need to buy literally everything except plates and cutlery and I mean everything: bed, sofa, cupboards, closets, vacumcleaner, dishwasher, bedlinnen, etc etc and I don't have a car so I need to get it delivered home or rent a car/van for the day.
Is there any shop/sites that you recommend that give great discounts when you purchase a lot or is just to head to IKEA and get all I need.
Cheers

Hello fellow Newbie!
Have you tried Freecycle? there are literally hundreds of items given away on there each week, and some of it is new.
You could possibly kit your whole new gaff out for nil pennies!0 -
Hallo!!!! You can get some discounts here & there but not sure about all in one place. Have look on the discounts and vouchers and the Quick grabbit forums you can get some good deals like free delivery and 10 -20% here and there....
What I have found is most shops (apart from Ikea) tend to sell the very similar items, so you can do a swift online comparison on Woolies, Matalan & Argos for home stuff, Woolies & Argos deliver Matalan does not...oh yes forgot to mention Tescos online & Asda all online & deliver
Also check out Robert Dyas & the Morphy Richards websites for on going special offers and both deliver.
If you are feeling quite adventurous then also check out ebay & gum tree....but if you are looking to get everything in one place then just go to Ikea.....
Well done on getting your place, hope you find everything you need.....:beer:0 -

Hi Lotta, try https://www.whatsgoingcheap.co.uk they have 3* goods that are brand new and a B grade section which may be slightly damaged, they always state what damage. I have bought B grade before and have never found any damage when inspected. I got a bagless vacume for £17.58 it's very good, only the box was damaged. Have bought Lamps, set top box, dinner set, liquidisor, scales, bed linen etc0

Me and my other half have just bought a house and we bought some amazing new bargains on Ebay mostly from business sellers. Eg King Size Real Leather Sleigh Brown Bed £265 plus £65 delivery, Hoover One Touch £51 with delivery included worth £170, Dark Mango TV Unit (nicer than the Dakota range in Next brand new shipped from overseas in 3 weeks) £79 INC DELIVERY :j, Hinari Mirror Door Microwave £35 including delivery (this was graded ie customer return but good as new couldnt tell it was a slight second) Other than that we have shopped in Dunelm for shades and blinds if you have one of those by you and also good old IKEA! Good luck0

If you have an Emmaus handy you could pick up some bargains, and they deliver for a small fee.
Emmaus is an organisation which provides accommodation and help for homeless people.0 -
Try your local auction house, one that does house clearances.0

I second the suggestion for Freecycle! You'll be able to get sofa, bed (I'd recommend buying a new mattress, though), shelves, washing machine, fridge, freezer and vacuum without trouble, if my four local Freecycle lists are typical of the norm. You might even be able to pick up pots and pans and plates and other kitchen stuff, too. It might not be exactly what you'd choose to buy yourself, but it will give you something for now so you can take the time to look around for what you really want when you get here.
I'm setting up home from scratch in September, and have been using the long notice to look around for the best deals. I've saved a fortune by shopping around at different places at the right time (£80 pans for £16.50, ironing board for £1 delivered), but that might be more hassle than you have time for. I intend to use Freecycle for my furniture to start with, and upgrade if necessary when I've moved in and know what I really want.
Failing that, if you want a one-stop-shop for things, IKEA is probably your best bet. You can get everything except a kettle, if I recall correctly.0 -
Another vote for ebay and freecycle.www.marketfad.com wrote: »
